Dear Mr. Coney Island...
What happened to Rose Court on 36th street between Neptune and Mermaid  Avenue?

- Darlene Concepcion

Hello Darlene,

Rose Court and most of the homes and bungalows on West 36th Street were demolished by the City in 1971 as part of urban renewal. There are now two-story row houses on the site.

A very dear friend mine who recently died wrote and recorded a wonderful song about spending his boyhood summers in a modest bungalow colony with a gate facing the street near the Boardwalk in Coney Island. From the song's lyrics, I suspect he may have been referring to Rose Court.

My aunt lived in the main house at Rose Court, she rented out the bungalows every summer. I never stayed there, but I stayed across the street at her sister's property. She had a main house and a few bungalows that she rented for the summer. I loved coming there back in the early 1950's. I lived in Indiana, and stayed my aunt Bertha Hammond, her sister was Anna Hutter. Their friend across the street, Mr Arditty owned the apartment buildings.
